It is in the town centre of Alkmaar, famous for its cheese market and laden with history from the days when the county of Holland lived through its heyday, where this cycle route begins. You will leave the town alongside the Noordhollands Kanaal, constructed in 1825 to connect Amsterdam with the North Sea. A cycle track through the country side in the Sluispolder will lead you through the artists village of Bergen. First the cyclist is led around the edge of the village towards a 17th century wind mill at the side of the Bergermeerpolder. Later you will cycle through this quaint village where you will pass the ruins of a church which is still beautifully walled in. On a 10 km cycle track, straight through the breathtaking and impressive Noordhollands Dune Reservation area, you will reach the picturesque villages of Bergen aan Zee and Egmond aan the Hoef.
'Breathtaking' should be considered here literally as well, as the cycle track climbs up and down the dunes. Because of this you can also take an alternative route.
Once in Egmond aan the Hoef you will cycle along the remains of the old castle Slot op den Hoef. This whole area is a protected area and therefore very well kept. Through meadow lands and bulb fields you will reach Heilo and continue through the Heilooėrbos (Heiloo wood) which is part of the old Nijenburg estate.
From here a 'cyclists-only'-route leads towards the Alkmaar town centre.

The last part of this cycle trip leads through the old centre of the town. As part of it is pedestrianized, cyclists need to descent first and continue on foot. This is more than worth while. You will first see the Gothic St. Laurents Church. Then past the Town Hall, which was built in 1520, you will walk towards the Vismarkt (Fish Market). Here the cycle tour continues by bike, alongsde the Waaggebouw and the world-famous cheese market which was already in use during the 17th century. A little further you will find many buildings and almshouses of which the history goes back to the 16th and 17th centuries. After crossing the Noordhollands Kanaal by a narrow bridge, you will be back at the railway station.
- An entry ticket must be purchased to enter the Noordhollands Duinreservaat (Dune reservation area).
- Even though it is higly recommended to cross the Duinreservaat, for those who may find they may not have enough stamina to cycle through the dunes, a bypass is provided which will keep to flat area only.
- Please keep in mind that all distances given are in kilometers. 1 Mile is approx. 1.6 km.
Enjoy your cycle trip !
